Today, one baby dies from neonatal tetanus every nine minutes. Most of these deaths occur in the 30 countries that have not yet eliminated Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT)
With a fatality rate of nearly 100 percent in areas lacking treatment facilities, once contracted, tetanus is almost always deadly for newborns.
These tragedies don't have to happen. The cost of healthcare education and prevention services is very affordable. But most MNT sufferers live and die unserved by anyone because they are too remote, too poor and too invisible to the world.
But not anymore thanks to Kiwanis and The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. Kiwanis is raising funds to provide vaccinations to 61 million women in the 37 countries still suffering from MNT, partnering with UNICEF to deliver these life changing vaccinations.
The elimination of MNT requires vaccines, syringes, safe transport and storage, education of communities, training of health workers and more. Just three doses of immunizaton - costing roughly $2.00 - can protect a mother and her future babies.
